Graduate Programs in Biomedical Sciences
The University of South Carolina (USC) School of Medicine offers graduate degrees at the Ph.D. and Master’s levels in addition to a Post-Baccalaureate Certificate program.
Students seeking a Ph.D. in Biomedical Sciences enter through the ‘Integrated Biomedical Science Program’. In the Integrated program the student can select a faculty mentor from different departments at USC including faculty at the School of Medicine (Department of Cell Biology & Anatomy, Department of Pathology, Microbiology and Immunology and Department of Pharmacology, Physiology and Neuroscience), School of Arts and Sciences (Department of Biological Sciences and Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry), School of Pharmacy (Department of Drug Discovery Biomedical Sciences) and the School of Public Health (Department of Exercise Science). Applications for this program are accepted beginning in fall of each academic year.
In the Master’s of Biomedical Sciences Program students can select a faculty mentor only from the Basic Science departments at the School of Medicine (Department of Cell Biology & Anatomy, Department of Pathology, Microbiology and Immunology and Department of Pharmacology, Physiology and Neuroscience). Currently there are over forty faculty with research interests and expertise in areas including cancer, inflammation, neuroscience, cardiovascular biology, alternative medicine and others. Applications to the MS program should be submitted by March 1st to receive full consideration and admissions are made on a rolling basis until the incoming class is filled.
For students seeking to improve their credentials prior to applying to medical school or pursuing graduate-level education in the health sciences, the School of Medicine offers a one year Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Biomedical Sciences. This program provides students extensive graduate-level course work in biomedical related areas (anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, biochemistry and others) to prepare them for the next step in their educational goal.
